Why do we learn history?

At Brunel we aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the history of the world in which they live. All Brunel children will leave primary school with a wide ranging and deep knowledge of the past, of places and people and significant events through time. We aim to equip pupils with the ability to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.

Our approach

We focus on core historical enquiry skills from the national curriculum such as: similarities and differences, continuity and change, significance, the impact of individuals and events, comparing and contrasting, and source analysis. From the beginning of KS1 through to the end of KS2, pupils are exposed to a wide range of historical periods across the globe. In their time at Ark Brunel, pupils will learn about global history alongside that of the British Isles; how nations have changed; and how Empires and civilisations have risen and fallen and the impact they left behind. As a school, we have mapped out significant People and Places of History – ensuring the sharing of knowledge from around the world.
