Why do we learn physical education?
We have 3 main aims for PE at Ark Brunel:
- Every child is active
- Children will be taught transferrable skills
- Children will have the opportunity to take part in a range of sports
To achieve this, we split the P.E. curriculum into 2 main areas: sports and fitness. The sport aspect of our curriculum teaches children key skills and movements which they can apply to a range of sports. These are then applied in a range of modified games such as football, tennis and basketball. The children also develop effective communication and teamwork skills. The fitness aspect of our curriculum teaches children how to be active to music and encourages children to lead healthy lifestyles. We also have a half termly focus on a different aspect of health. This helps children to make good choices and understand the effects of exercise on their bodies.
Our approach
In Early years, the children build a foundation for their physical development through a range of activities both in and outside the classroom. In year 1 the children begin 2 PE sessions per week. These are structured with a clear warm up, activity and cool down. For example, the children play a game to warm up, learn a skill such as how to perform a forearm shot in tennis and then apply this in a short game. Then the children assess their progress and cool down. In KS1 the children engage in a variety of lessons, building their knowledge and vocabulary around sport and being healthy. They learn how to move their bodies in different ways and participate in sports such as athletics and basketball. They are introduced to the skills they will need such as throwing and catching, balancing and jumping. In KS2, the children build upon these skills. The children practise through a range of drills and matches. The teacher models and evaluates their progress throughout the lesson. The children practise in pairs and groups until they build up to a full match. They build on the knowledge and vocabulary they learnt in KS1 and use this to partake in PE lessons. PE lessons are fully accessible for all children including those with SEND. The skills and games are modelled carefully so each child understands what they are being asked to do. Vocabulary is clear and repeated so the children can begin to use this from an early age. The children leave primary school with a solid base in physical education. They know how to perform range of skills and can transfer these into different sports.
